A Government app, no less, as the website www.crashmap.co.uk is launched, which contains the records of over one million UK car crashes. The website collates data from police databases and makes them searchable, allowing anyone to download a detailed crash report. All a user has to do is insert a postcode and every reported crash in the vicinity is transposed onto a map, colour coded between minor, major and fatal. You could, in theory, have a look at the report complied after Rowan Atkinson wrote off his McLaren F1 in Peterborough. (Picture above.) Users must register to obtain reports, however, and there’s a charge for them – although accident locations can be searched for free. Downloaded reports give information such as the weather at the time of the crash, the road conditions, and the gender and the age of anyone injured or killed. The data goes back to 2005 and is approved by the Government’s National Statistics Authority The Government is this week due to unveil its road casualty report for 2010, although all the data expected to be revealed therein is already available on crashmap.co.uk.
